Why is this article important to Generation Z?: This devastation to college towns is essential for college students to know, to be aware of what their community is facing.
The Big Ten Football League announced the cancellation of the fall sport this past week. While disappointing to college football fans, this news will create more significant problems for business owners and their employees in these towns. In Madison, WI, it is estimated that each home game brings in roughly $16 million, with several local businesses attributing 70% of their annual revenue to tourism. Restaurants, hotels, bars, and shops in College Park, Maryland; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Lincoln, Nebraska; and the other eleven college towns are reliant on weekend gameday visitors' business, and as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, will suffer substantial economic losses.
