Why This Matters To Gen Z: The mass migration to remote work helped companies solve a major coronavirus challenge: the lack of interns due to internship cancellations. However, the pandemic has led to a massive rise in remote internship work opportunities for college students as the barrier of relocation is no longer an issue.
Prior to remote work, prestigious internship opportunities were reserved for children of affluent families who could afford the $4,000-$5,000 cost of relocating to the most expensive cities in the U.S., such as New York and Washington D.C.
The transition to remote work is seldom perfect and has exploited major socioeconomic divides between minority and white students.
A WayUp survey highlighted that Black and Hispanic college students and recent grads are much less comfortable with virtual work than their White counterparts, citing limited technology access and a lack of physical workspace.
