Relevance to Generation Z:
TikTok is a social media platform primarily used by Gen Z and serves as a platform that young social media users have used to amplify political conversations, mental health tips, and just personal enjoyment. Therefore any decisions made surrounding the app affect Gen Z as it is a crucial platform primarily in use by our generation.
The United States government has granted TikTok an extension to their deadline for making it a "new, global company" through its negotiations with Walmart and Oracle. While the previous deadline was November 12th, it is now December 4th, 2020. The government previously attempted to ban the app earlier this year. Although, this act was prevented in court after citing national security reasons. TikTok is currently owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, but after the deal, it will have a "majority" of investors from America. If the new deadline is not met, it is unclear what will happen, as the first executive order that began the deal "outlines no consequences at all".
