Relevance to Generation Z:
This article is important to Gen Z because reactions like this from the German Foreign Minister are rare. President-elect Joe Biden will have to attempt to rebuild relationships with foreign countries in the next four years, some of which have been broken or strained under the current administration.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas urged Democrats and Republicans to model restraint before the election had officially been called. He suggested that input from politicians would contribute to the growing tensions.
“America is more than a one-man show. Anyone who continues to pour oil on the fire in a situation like this is acting irresponsibly,” Maas told Germany’s Funke media.
He also went on to comment on how he believes the candidates should react to the outcome of the election.
“Decent losers are more important for the functioning of a democracy than radiant winners,” he added.
Maas expects that even when the results are clear, the U.S. will not return to full force on the international scale yet, saying the world needs them to be a “force for order” rather than a “factor of chaos.”
