Why is this article important to you and Generation Z?
The Swiss public approved a ban on full facial coverings in public spaces. The ban mirrors similar bans in other European countries and is subject to immense criticism as it violates religious freedom. Islamophobia and hypernationalism stemming from a "fear" of terrorism and the after-effects of the attacks of 9/11 are less impressionable on Gen Z as a generation as they are not only more tolerant of religious differences but also are coming of age long after the attacks of 9/11 and the hypernationalism and Islamophobia built during the years of the Iraq war.
Switzerland voted to ban facial coverings which obscure the entire face, such as the niqab and burqa, in almost all public spaces. The proposal, which outlaws such facial coverings on public transportation, in restaurants, on streets, and in public offices and shops, amassed 51.21% of the public’s support. Religious organizations, human rights groups, and the Swiss federal government have criticized the ban, while the Swiss Council of Religions claims that it is a violation of religious freedom. Several other European countries have similar bans that have faced criticism from the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
